Main Kitchen DrainPipes Replacement Project
September 19, 2025: Project Completion
The Main Kitchen Drainpipes Replacement Project has been completed!
As expected, this project was complicated due to the intertwining of electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems in the Basement. Because of this, it was done in several stages: a triage stage, to get the Main Kitchen operational again, and several follow-up stages to complete the work.
All of the cast iron has been replaced with PVC, except for two small sections, which would have required the complete dismantling of large portions of the HVAC ducting. Both sections of the cast-iron drainpipes are still in good condition, so they will remain as-is until replacement becomes critical (hopefully not anytime soon!) or we already have cause to work on the HVAC ducting.
All the old material has been removed, and the basement is dry and leak-free once again!
The total project cost was $6,875.96:
$955.96 for the initial triage stage
$5,920 for later stages and project completion
The total cost falls within the $5,000 - $7,000 budget range approved by the Finance Committee.
Thanks to Robert Hollis (Property Committee Chairperson) and Joanna Jewett (Finance Committee Chairperson) for another successful project!
August 29, 2025: Scope, Bidding, & Budget
If you’ve been in the building this week, you’ve probably noticed the Main Kitchen has been closed. A leak in the old cast-iron drainpipes—original to the 1965 construction—was discovered, causing water to drain onto HVAC equipment in the Basement. After receiving quotes, Glasscock Plumbing was selected to replace the pipes completely, with work beginning Tuesday, September 2. The kitchen is expected to be ready for Breakfast & Bible Study on Wednesday morning. This project is estimated to cost between $5,000 and $7,000, and has been approved by our Finance and Property Committees.
